The December 2004 tsunami killed more than 225,000 people in 12 countries, left millions homeless and destitute, and tore a path of destruction and misery that is nearly unprecedented in modern history. Within the first critical days, ERD made available emergency assistance funds to existing church partners, and deployed a staff member and consultant to the region for a needs assessment. We are currently in Phase III of the rehabilitation program which will last from January 2006-December 2008 and address long-term needs such as housing reconstruction and livelihood recovery.
