Healing People and Providing Opportunities for Growth

Like many HIV-positive women in Honduras, Johanna suffered from untreated illnesses associated with her condition. “I was so sick my family carried me to Siempre Unidos (Always Together),” says Johanna. The program, run jointly by Episcopal Relief & Development, the Diocese of Honduras and Siempre Unidos, saved her life.

In addition to suffering from HIV-related illnesses, Johanna had just given birth, was weak and couldn’t see or walk. Desperate for medical care, Johanna was given life-saving anti-retroviral drugs. Within a few weeks, she could see and walk again. After she recovered, she was ready to find work to support her new baby boy. However, Johanna’s medical conditions made it challenging for her to maintain employment.

One of the main goals of Episcopal Relief & Development’s HIV/AIDS programs in Honduras is to provide flexible employment opportunities that enable people living with HIV/AIDS to provide for themselves and their families.

Johanna was hired at an industrial sewing shop managed by Siempre Unidos. She goes to work each day, always has a joke to share with her fellow workers, and is thriving in the Siempre Unidos community. “I want to thank God,” Johanna says about the positive direction her life has taken. “Here we learn that we can succeed and do have worth.”
