Every minute a woman dies, and 20 women are injured or permanently disabled, due to childbirth. Almost all of these 529,000 deaths each year are preventable.
Nearly half of all deliveries in the developing world lack a trained attendant. Trained midwives can safely deliver a baby under normal circumstances, and know when a difficult birth requires further medical attention.
Unfortunately, many developing countries have only a handful of health care facilities equipped to handle obstetric emergencies. Many women can not reach them in time.
How to turn the tide
- Make pre-natal and post-natal care available to women and babies
- Train traditional birth attendants to recognize an obstetric complication before it becomes a life-threatening emergency
- Make health care facilities equipped to deal with obstetric emergencies accessible throughout the world
- Part of your gift of 0.7% of your annual income to ERD goes toward maternal health. ERD's programs help women and mothers to empower themselves and climb out of poverty. Give to ERD here.
