Goal 1: Eradicate Extreme Poverty and Hunger
Gloria used this heavy wooden pestle to pound grain (Uma, Philippines)

One sixth of the world’s population lives on less than $1.00 every day. One person dies from hunger every 3.5 seconds. Each one of them is a child of God.

The aim of Goal One is to cut in half the number of people who are hungry.

Making It Real

Episcopal Relief and Development is fighting poverty and hunger every day.  For example, we have partnered with the Diocese of Katanga in the Democratic Republic of Congo to provide opportunities to improve crops and earn income in some of the most impoverished communities in the region.

Ambroise is a farmer in Katakela, a small village in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where life is very difficult.  Nearly 80 percent of the Congolese survive on just 30 cents a day.  Ambroise had a small garden behind his home, but the yield was minimal.. As a result, his children were malnourished.  Through ERD’s food security program in their community, Ambroise and his neighbors were given a large plot of land and taught effective practices such as seasonal farming and crop diversification.  Thanks to ERD, Ambroise is now able to produce an abundant supply of food to feed his family.  He can send his children to school with money he earns from selling the excess produce.

What You Can Do: GIVE.

Make a donation toward the elimination of extreme global poverty. Give to an organization like ERD that fights extreme poverty and hunger.

For Further Consideration

  • Commit to giving 0.7% of your annual income on the Episcopalians for Global Reconciliation website. EGR is keeping track of individuals, congregations, and dioceses who have pledged 0.7%.

  • Urge your friends, fellow parishioners, church, and diocese to do the same.

How ERD is making a difference...

    Countries
We lift communities out of poverty around the world in areas such as Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and Asia. We partner with local organizations in the Anglican Communion to ensure vulnerable people have healthy food to eat and get proper health care.

    Domestic
We provide critical supplies to people through local dioceses after natural and human-made disasters. We partner with the dioceses to get life-saving aid to children and their families and stay with communities after the crisis to provide ongoing support.
