Phase 2: Assessment and Clean-up

Months 3-6

The second phase of the recovery effort began in October 2005 and will run through June 2006. It will cover an ongoing clean-up and early rehabilitation and recovery activities. We are currently assisting those affected by Hurricane Katrina by organizing an increase in local efforts to help collect and distribute survival goods into the needy areas.

Seven staging areas and distribution centers have been set up in the Diocese of Mississippi while three distribution centers have been set up in the Diocese of Louisiana. These distribution centers, operating out of churches and church schools, provide, store and distribute essential relief such as food, water, medicines, gas, clean-up and rebuilding supplies.

These distribution centers also serve as shelters for volunteer clean-up crews and staff, doubling as a medical facility to care for the injured, to administer crucial shots such as tetanus and also as counseling centers for those concerned about their loved ones.  In many ways, the centers become a place of peace for those directly suffering from the Katrina aftermath.
