Phase 1: Immediate Response

Months 1-3

The first phase of the recovery refers to the first three months where the emphasis was placed on rescuing,  feeding, sheltering, cleaning up, and other immediate needs. In the initial response to the disaster, ERD partnered with nine Episcopal dioceses.

Our partnerships with the Diocese of Mississippi (LEDR), the Diocese of Louisiana (ODR), and the Diocese of Central Gulf Coast brought critical supplies— food, water, baby formula and first aid— to and from over 10 distribution centers throughout the Gulf Coast area.

ERD supports the local coordinators who organize, house, and deploy self-supporting volunteers who provide medical care and shelter and place evacuee families in the areas of greatest initial impact.  ERD also works with dioceses in Tennessee, Kansas, Louisiana, Alabama, and Texas to support the feeding and housing of evacuees scattered across the United States. An initial partnership with Episcopal Migration Ministries sets the stage for temporary or permanent resettlement activities on a national level.
