The MDG Inspiration Fund
  [Episcopal Relief and Development]

In 2000, leaders from the United States and 190 other nations came together to develop a plan to cut extreme global poverty in half by 2015. To guide this critical work and measure its success, eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were created. At the 74th General Convention in 2003, the Episcopal Church formally endorsed the MDGs. In 2006, at the 75th Convention, the Church voted to make the MDGs a mission priority over the next three years.

In 2007 - at the midpoint of this historic effort - Episcopal Relief and Development, Jubilee Ministries and the Executive Council of the Episcopal Church launched the MDG Inspiration Fund to highlight the urgency of reaching these goals. The Fund focuses specifically on achieving goals 4, 5 and 6.  To inspire congregations around the country to action, the Executive Council made an initial grant of $924,000, representing 0.7% of the Episcopal Church's budget. Episcopal Relief and Development raised additional contributions, bringing the Fund total to more than $1.3 million. Episcopal Relief and Development is asking for your help to reach our goal of $3 million.

“Resolved, that Episcopal Relief and Development,Jubilee Ministries and Executive Council set up a $3 million ‘Inspiration Fund’ to fight malaria and other diseases.”

Join your parish in supporting the MDG Inspiration Fund to promote health and fight disease. This urgent and lifesaving work only can be achieved through your efforts and generosity.  Give out of your abudance; give out of obediance to Jesus' mandate to minister to the least of these.

The income generated from the MDG Inspiration Fund will be primarily used to fight malaria, which is an objective of MDG #6, along with HIV/AIDS and other preventable diseases. Malaria is an easily treatable disease and is a high priority for many of ERD’s partners in the Anglican Communion. Although this program specifically targets MDG #6, several additional MDGs are addressed through malaria prevention, including MDG# 1, 3, 4, 5, 7 and 8.

The Fund will assign $2 million of the total $3 million to be used in support of ERD’s NetsforLifeSM program, a partnership for malaria prevention in 16 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa with a possible pilot program in Asia. ERD is an implementing partner in NetsforLifeSM.  The program promotes an integrated prevention model that focuses on delivering long-lasting insecticide-treated nets, building community awareness about malaria, training people on proper use of the nets and educating communities to seek treatment while advocating for better access to drug therapies.
ERD will work in partnership with Jubilee Ministries to allocate the remaining $1 million for programs targeting global health issues including, but not limited to malaria prevention in Latin America and the Caribbean.
