Zambia
Promised economic reforms have been slow to evolve since Zambia became a multi-party democracy in the 1990s. An estimated 86% are living in poverty and 16.5% (one million people) of the adult population is infected with HIV/AIDS. Zambia has one of the highest incidences of malaria-related deaths in the world.
Episcopal Relief & Development is partnering with the Zambian Anglican Council (ZAC) to strengthen its capacity to implement integrated development and health activities throughout all dioceses.
Promoting Health and Fighting Disease
-
Zambia is one of 17 countries in sub-Saharan Africa to implement the NetsforLife® program, distributing long-lasting insecticide-treated nets and educating the community about malaria.
-
HIV/AIDS awareness workshops train health workers and traditional healers to teach prevention methods and encourage voluntary testing and treatment.
-
A new initiative to Prevent Mother-to-Child HIV Transmission (PMTCT) is underway through the Livingstone Anglican Children’s Project. The program sensitizes pregnant women to the risks of transmitting HIV/AIDS to their unborn children. Primary health care and monitoring are also provided to children orphaned by AIDS.
Alleviating Hunger and Improving Food Supply
- Improved seeds and agricultural training are increasing the quality of crops and size of harvests.
- A demonstration farm teaches effective farming techniques, and a livestock program provides goats to increase food supply and create a source of income for families.
