Vanuatu

Vanuatu is a group of 82 relatively small islands in the South Pacific that cover more than 12,000 square kilometers. Most of the islands are steep, with unstable soils and little permanent freshwater. Freshwater is growing scarce and deforestation is quickly becoming a problem.

Vanuatu’s relatively fast growing population is placing increased pressure on local resources for farming, grazing, hunting and fishing. Many families in rural areas depend on farming to survive.

Episcopal Relief & Development is working with the Church of the Province of Melanesia to provide education opportunities and combat climate change.

Creating Economic Opportunities and Strengthening Communities:

  • Each diocesan Mothers Union runs literacy programs for over 300 students. Volunteer teachers receive teacher training and access to resources.

  • Those who were unable to finish school are taught important life and vocational skills such as business management at two Rural Training Centers (RTCs) across the country.

  • Solar panels provide power for the RTCs and classes are taught about generating and utilizing solar energy as an alternative source of energy.

  • The community in the island of Loh is being supported in an effort to educate residents about climate change and help them come up with an action plan to combat its negative effects on their crops.

Episcopal Relief & Development uses your financial gifts in the most effective ways possible to serve and support people suffering worldwide. More information
