US Disaster Recovery Program

Episcopal Relief & Development’s US Disaster Recovery Program provides continued financial assistance to church-affiliated groups working to meet the longer-term recovery needs of vulnerable people following a disaster.

The disbursement of these funds is coordinated by a Diocesan Disaster Coordinator who works closely with the Program Manager of Episcopal Relief & Development’s US Disaster Program. In most cases, long-term assistance is an extension of the funding that was sent shortly following a disaster, and an expansion of existing recovery efforts.

Episcopal Relief & Development is currently supporting various programs around the US, including:

  • Episcopal Diocese of North Dakota: Working with All Saints Episcopal Church in Minot to winterize flooded homes and create the infrastructure to rebuild come spring. Also supporting a case manager for the Spirit Lake tribe to assist the community members as they recover from gradual long-term flooding that has devastated their reservation.
  • The Episcopal Diocese of Alabama: Helping to provide long-term rebuilding and recovery assistance for the unmet needs of families affected by tornadoes in Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Cullman, Sawyerville, Madison County and Dekalb County.
  • Diocese of Texas, Bastrop, TX: Working with Calvary Episcopal Church and ecumenical partners to rebuild homes following the devastating fires in 2011.
  • Episcopal Community Services of Louisiana (ECSLA): Supporting oil spill-affected communities as they adapt to the financial, emotional and social changes caused by the oil spill, through case management and supporting community resilience.
  • Jericho Road (Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana): Working in partnership to revitalize Central City, a New Orleans neighborhood recovering from Hurricane Katrina and decades of disinvestment.
  • Diocese of Vermont: Supporting parish ministries in responding to local needs following Hurricane Irene.

In the past, Episcopal Relief & Development has assisted various other programs, including:

  • The Episcopal Diocese of Tennessee: Rebuilding homes in Nashville that were damaged during the 2010 floods, through St. Luke's Community House's Restore a Dream Center.
  • The Episcopal Diocese of Texas: Rebuilding homes for elderly and disabled residents affected by Hurricane Ike in Galveston and the surrounding communities.
  • The Episcopal Diocese of Mississippi: Expanding home-ownership opportunities on the Gulf Coast through the diocese's Hallelujah Housing program, as well as providing financial education and assistance through a parish-based ministry.
  • The Episcopal Diocese of Iowa: Addressing the needs of vulnerable communities in recovery efforts following the floods of 2008.
  • The Episcopal Diocese of North Dakota: Working with communities both on and off Native American reservations following floods and tornadoes in 2008.
