Solomon Islands Impacted by Tsunami
January 5, 2010
On Monday, January 4, two earthquakes, measuring 6.6 and 7.2 on the Richter scale, hit Rendova and Tetepara, two of the Solomon Islands. Two large waves (tsunami) damaged homes and property and there is also widespread flooding in the affected areas. No deaths have been reported at this time.
Episcopal Relief & Development is in contact with its partner, the Anglican Church of Melanesia (ACOM) to determine an appropriate response.
“We actually began working with the Anglican Church of Melanesia after the 2007 tsunami, which affected the same areas. We will continue to support them in the face of this new destruction,” said Kirsten Muth, Episcopal Relief & Development’s Senior Program Director for Asia. “The Anglican Church of Melanesia has a strong presence in the affected areas."
