Episcopal Relief & Development is partnering with the Church of the Province of Melanesia to increase literacy rates and support other training programs that provide people with the skills they need to prosper.
Creating Economic Opportunities and Strengthening Communities:
-
Diocesan Mothers' Unions run literacy programs for over 550 students. Volunteer teachers receive teacher training and access to resources.
-
Those who were unable to finish school are taught important life and vocational skills such as business management at four Rural Training Centers (RTCs) across the country.
-
Solar panels provide power for the RTCs and classes are taught about generating and utilizing solar energy as an alternative source of electricity.
Alleviating Hunger and Improving Food Supply:
-
An experimental farm is testing salt-resistant crops that will prosper despite rising water levels and sea spray in the island of Ontong Java. This will help residents maintain access to food despite environmental changes and bad weather.
