Sierra Leone

Between 1991 and 2001, approximately 50,000 people were killed in Sierra Leone’s civil war. Hundred of thousands of people were forced to leave their homes, many becoming refugees in Guinea and Liberia. The atrocities of the war have left women and children especially vulnerable as a result of high incidence of sexual violence and the prevalence of using youth as “child soldiers.”

Episcopal Relief & Development is partnering with the Diocese of Bo, which covers the South-Eastern parts of the country, to focus on improving food supply, increasing gender awareness and promoting health and fighting disease in 12 resettled communities.

Alleviating Hunger and Improving Food Supply

  • Plant nurseries are being created to provide nutritional substance for communities and their livestock.

Creating Economic Opportunities and Strengthening Communities

  • Communities are being taught skills and given tools to care for the plant nurseries.

  • Workshops are being held to form working groups and Community Development Committees.

  • Education about gender-based violence and gender-roles is occurring on a Diocesan level, with plans to implement more workshops in the future.
