Raise Awareness About Poverty, Hunger and Disease
Let everyone in on the good news about Episcopal Relief & Development.
Spread the word in your community, church, and family. Here’s how:
- Start a book club focused on poverty and related issues. Check our suggested reading list for books.
- Create a display using a mosquito net. Mosquito nets can be purchased from a local camping store or online and are a powerful visual aid for educating people about malaria. Hang the net prominently in the church to draw attention.
- Arrange a ‘sleep outside Saturday.’ Church members can learn more about the importance of long-lasting insecticide-treated nets for preventing the transmission of malaria by sleeping outside. If you have a church yard, consider dedicating one Saturday night for youth members to sleep outside, or suggest they have a “sleeping bag Saturday” — members sleep in the church basement to experience what it’s like to go without the comforts they’re accustomed to. The next day’s sermons and Sunday school activities can touch on the experience of “living” in someone else’s shoes and discussing the hardships of poverty.
- Hold a weekend holiday retreat with a special speaker to explore challenges facing people living in poverty. Request a Speaker in our Congregational Tools section.
- Eat one inexpensive meal each week, such as rice and beans, to help your family understand the types of meals many people around the world survive on. Help your children decorate a box or jar, and each week drop the savings from your weekly meal into the container to be donated to Episcopal Relief & Development.
