Preparing for Disasters Here at Home

Helping communities here in the U.S. prepare for natural disasters is a key priority of Episcopal Relief & Development, which is why we are pleased to announce that this critical program will be under the new — and extremely able — leadership of Katie Mears.

Katie has spent the past several years working with our partners in the Diocese of Louisiana in New Orleans.  There she spearheaded efforts to teach basic building skills to thousands of volunteers while creating an environment of listening, pastoral care, respect and empowerment for the people still struggling to rebuild their lives after Katrina and Rita.

During last year’s historic flooding of the Mississippi tributaries and Hurricane Ike in Galveston, Katie also provided invaluable support to the Dioceses of Iowa and Texas as they responded to their own recent disasters. Our work in the hard hit communities continues, and we know our efforts will benefit greatly from Katie’s experience and insight. Welcome Katie, we’re happy to have you on the team!
