Episcopal Relief & Development Offers Support Following Mississippi Tornado
June 7, 2010
On April 24, 2010, a violent tornado ripped through Mississippi, leaving devastation in its path. A category F4 (on a scale of F1 to F5), it was one of the rarest and most destructive types, which account for less than 1% of all tornadoes. Over a mile wide at the base, the tornado remained on the ground in the central part of the state for nearly 200 miles, destroying countless homes, killing 10 residents and injuring dozens more.
In the aftermath of this disaster, Episcopal Relief & Development is working with Lutheran Episcopal Services in Mississippi (LESM) to reach those most in need. Assistance from the agency will help cover the cost of equipment needed to clear rubble and begin rebuilding. It will also enable LESM to hire construction experts and workers and secure materials to help communities recover from the near total destruction left in the tornado’s wake.
Please continue to pray for all those affected by this disaster and others who remain vulnerable to the threat of additional storms.
