Mexico

Mexico has one of the largest and most diverse indigenous populations in Latin America, numbering approximately 12.7 million people. The majority of the indigenous population is concentrated in the southern and south-central part of Mexico. In contrast to the general population of Mexico, indigenous peoples suffer from extremely high rates of poverty, unemployment and illiteracy. In addition, indigenous populations are often underserved and experience lack of access to many basic services.

Episcopal Relief & Development is partnering with the Diocese of Southeast Mexico to aid indigenous peoples in the states of Veracruz and Oaxaca. In the villages of Arroyo Zacate and Camalotal, the partnership is striving to build local economies through job creation and the growth of local markets.

Alleviating Hunger and Improving Food Supply

  • The establishment of cattle cooperatives improves the overall nutrition and health of the community because of access to cattle and production of milk and cheese.

Creating Economic Opportunities and Strengthening Communities

  • Diverse employment opportunities are created through the establishment of cattle cooperatives.

  • Cattle farmers are taught to work together caring for the land and the cattle. They learn the skills needed to keep cows healthy so they can be sold for a fair price at market.

  • Community members receive training on milk and cheese production. This increases local job opportunities and improves local markets.
