The MDG Inspiration Fund: In Dollars and Cents
From 2007 to 2009, the MDG Inspiration Fund raised over $3.2 million dollars.
In 2007, the MDG Inspiration Fund was launched with a grant of $924,000 from the Executive Council — the Episcopal Church’s 0.7% budget commitment to the MDGs for 2007. Through additional fundraising efforts by Episcopal Relief & Development and churches around the country, the grand total of the MDG Inspiration Fund was over $3.2 million.
Two-thirds of the money raised through the MDG Inspiration Fund will support NetsforLife®, a partnership for malaria prevention in 17 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. A pilot program in Asia is being considered as well. NetsforLife® promotes an integrated prevention model that focuses on distributing long-lasting insecticide-treated nets, building community awareness about malaria, training people in the proper use of nets, and educating communities on effective malaria prevention and treatment while advocating for better access to drug therapies.
Episcopal Relief & Development will work with Jubilee Ministries to use the remaining funds for programs in Latin America and the Caribbean that prevent malaria, HIV/AIDS, water-borne illnesses and acute respiratory infections; provide maternal health care; and train community health workers.
