Los Angeles Station Fire 84% Contained

Firefighters are expecting to fully contain the Station fire by September 19. The blaze has reached 250 square miles, the largest wildfire in recent Southern California history. Episcopal Relief & Development is standing ready to assist the Diocese of Los Angeles, where several of the largest congregations have been affected.

The Rt. Rev. J. Jon Bruno, Bishop of the Diocese of Los Angeles, has been fielding calls from throughout the diocese. He also spoke with Episcopal Relief & Development about the specific needs of several hundred people and expects that this number may grow.

The fire, which began August 26, is currently 84% contained. Officials have determined that an arsonist started the blaze, which has killed two firefighters, destroyed more than 50 structures, and cost an estimated $88 million to fight.

“Episcopal Relief & Development is standing by to support the diocese in ministering to local communities,” Abagail Nelson, Senior Vice President for Programs, said. “Please keep all those affected in your prayers.”
