Jerusalem/West Bank/Gaza

Economic and living conditions in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank — the two areas under the Palestinian Authority (PA) — are grim. Half the labor force is unemployed and 81% of the people live in poverty. Restrictions on the movement of people and goods across borders have created extreme shortages of food, fuel and medical supplies in the territories.

Episcopal Relief & Development is partnering with the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem to meet the urgent health care needs of the most vulnerable people in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The organization supports two hospitals — St. Luke’s Anglican Hospital in Nablus and Al Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza — that are providing emergency health care to those who have no other access to medical services.

Promoting Health and Fighting Disease

  • At Al Ahli Arab Hospital, free health care clinics ensure vulnerable residents can obtain medications and psycho-social screenings. These services are provided twice a month. Round-trip transportation provides access to care for people needing physical therapy, surgery, diagnostic evaluation and in-patient care.
  • St. Luke’s is a full-service medical facility, offering surgery, pediatrics, gynecology and intensive care to all in need, regardless of their ability to pay. St. Luke's works to enhance the welfare of the Palestinian community and actively encourages those living in poverty to come and be treated.
  • Episcopal Relief & Development is committed to paying the salary of St. Luke’s medical director until 2010 to ensure solid strategic direction for the future.
  • St. Luke’s runs community outreach programs that promote health care and improve the well-being of the local community.
