Haiti Earthquake Response - Phase II

Phase II activities focused on increasing security and engaging local communities in recovery efforts. Phase II’s “relief to recovery” programming assisted an additional 40,800 people by continuing and expanding health care services, creating short-term employment and building more stable housing and sanitation facilities.

Health Care
Episcopal Relief & Development’s support for the CEDDISEC mobile medical clinics was extended by two months from Phase I into Phase II. Also, operational support was provided to the Hôpital Ste. Croix (HSC) in Léogâne-ville.  Read more

Food (dry and wet)
In certain areas of Haiti where emergency needs remain, CEDDISEC, through the Episcopal parish network, served 2,760 families in over 35 communities with food that was purchased locally.  Read more

Non-Food Items (NFIs)
Non-food items secured in Phase I arrived in port and were transported to parishes for distribution. This included 33,000 school kits delivered to 32 locations.  Read more

Water and Sanitation 
Episcopal Relief & Development is supporting CEDDISEC in building and repairing latrines and shower blocks in a number of communities. This not only helps prevent the spread of diseases such as cholera, but also restores a sense of privacy and security, and helps protect women from gender-based harm.  Read more

Shelter 
CEDDISEC, with funding from Episcopal Relief & Development, is building provisional homes for vulnerable families in communities that were heavily affected by the earthquake. These homes are made of plywood, with a tin roof and a raised cinderblock foundation for added security and durability.  Read more

Transportation Support 
CEDDISEC’s “Port to Parish” program helps parishes to overcome the cost and logistical burden of receiving aid shipments. This program is supported by Episcopal Relief & Development.  Read more

Employment
With Episcopal Relief & Development’s support, CEDDISEC’s Cash-for-Work economic strengthening program is having a large impact on Haitians’ material and psychological well-being. By helping their communities, workers are earning wages which can pay for food, school fees and the reconstruction of homes, and also regaining a sense of agency in a situation where much is out of their control.  Read more

Community Recovery
The engagement of Haitians and Episcopal parishes in community-led recovery is one of the key objectives of CEDDISEC’s cash-for-work economic strengthening program. Work teams, supported through this initiative, are engaged in recovery programs that are identified and led by local communities.  Read more

In addition to supporting the program work of the Episcopal Diocese of Haiti and CEDDISEC, Episcopal Relief & Development has also provided direct technical and operational support to these institutions.  Read more
