Haiti Earthquake Response - Phase I
Phase I was characterized by rapid needs assessments and service provision. Food and non-food items were distributed throughout the Haitian parish network to assist families left homeless by the quake, as well as those hosting the displaced. Phase I’s “rescue and relief” programming assisted over 60,000 people with health care, food, water, shelter, sanitation, and other non-food items.
Search and Rescue
Episcopal Relief & Development supported work by the Episcopal Diocese of Haiti and CEDDISEC to save people and salvage property on church grounds. Read more
Health Care
With support from Episcopal Relief & Development, CEDDISEC provided health care to 20,890 individuals through a temporary clinic in Port-au-Prince and mobile clinics in remote areas severely affected by the earthquake. Additionally, during the days and weeks immediately following the earthquake, CEDDISEC organized ambulance services for injured persons as well as removal of the deceased to the General Hospital. Food (dry and wet)
With support from Episcopal Relief & Development, CEDDISEC provided food aid to displaced individuals at the College St. Pierre camp in Port-au-Prince and at other tent camps that emerged on or near Episcopal parish grounds in the areas of Carrefour and Léogâne. Food aid included both hot meals and dry rations. Read more
Non-Food Items (NFIs)
With support from Episcopal Relief & Development, CEDDISEC provided non-food items such as clothing, blankets and kerosene to displaced individuals at the College St. Pierre camp in Port-au-Prince, and to other vulnerable households as identified by Episcopal parishes in Port-au-Prince, Carrefour and Léogâne. Water and Sanitation
With Episcopal Relief & Development’s support, CEDDISEC transported water via trucks to camps in Port-au-Prince at College St. Pierre and Champs de Mars, and authorized local priests in Port-au-Prince, Léogâne and Carrefour to purchase water for distribution. In addition, CEDDISEC supported the repair and operation of existing water systems, and trained Development Agents to install and maintain chlorine water filters. Furthermore, CEDDISEC built four block latrines with 12 toilets each in four parishes in the Léogâne area, where large numbers of displaced individuals were gathering and building temporary shelters. Shelter
CEDDISEC, with support from Episcopal Relief & Development, distributed insecticide-treated tarps and construction materials to 450 families at the College St. Pierre camp in Port-au-Prince, and distributed 900 family-size tents throughout the Carrefour and Léogâne Episcopal parish network areas. Transportation Support
To aid in the distribution of supplies and the travel of program and diocesan staff, Episcopal Relief & Development secured 13 vehicles for the Diocese of Haiti and CEDDISEC. Read more
