Transportation Support
Transportation was a huge challenge in the days following the January 12 earthquake in Haiti. Roads were made impassable by debris, the airport was overwhelmed with traffic and operations at the port were shut down. Episcopal Relief & Development worked with partners to secure adequate means of transportation and ensure supplies could reach those who needed them most. The trucks that have been secured for use by the Episcopal Diocese of Haiti will enable the diocese to provide sustainable assistance to parishes throughout the country.

Three heavy-load trucks were purchased to transport supplies. One of the trucks was designated for use by the Episcopal Diocese of the Dominican Republic and the other two were allotted to the Episcopal Diocese of Haiti.
-
The Episcopal Diocese of Virginia raised money to purchase nine pickup trucks for use by the Diocese of Haiti’s development office and Episcopal Relief & Development staff working on the ground.
-
The Diocese of Haiti’s development office has initiated a Port to Parish program that will facilitate transportation of goods between Haitian churches and their U.S. partners. Transporting supplies in the aftermath of the earthquake is still incredibly difficult and expensive. Now, Haitian priests can request assistance from the diocesan development office, enabling them to have supplies brought to their churches with the diocese’s help.

For a few weeks following the quake, Episcopal Relief & Development used helicopter services on a limited basis to transport food and other supplies to villages in mountainous areas.
