Health Care

While it is impossible to know the exact number, estimates indicate that the Haiti quake took nearly 300,000 lives and caused just as many injuries. In the days and weeks following the quake, Haiti’s healthcare infrastructure was overwhelmed as the injured flooded hospitals and clinics.

In this emergency phase, Episcopal Relief & Development has been working closely with the Episcopal Diocese of Haiti and other partners to provide health care to as many people as possible. More than 18,000 people received care in the first three months following the quake. It is estimated that by the end of June 2010, a total of 30,000 individuals will have received care.

  • About three weeks after the earthquake, mobile health clinics began serving needs in more than 70 communities in the Léogane and Carrefour areas. The clinics are staffed by 29 Haitian doctors, nurses and psychologists. These clinics will continue to serve communities through Haiti’s rainy season.

  • Supplies for mobile health teams have been procured with the assistance of the Diocese of the Dominican Republic, IMA World Health, donations from other NGOs in Haiti and through local purchase.

  • Two rural clinics administered through the diocese will be rehabilitated in Trouin and Petit Harpon. These communities are currently being served by mobile health clinics.

  • Episcopal Relief & Development is providing interim assistance for a counseling and wellness program. Through this program and as part of the mobile health services, two psychologists are currently working with diocesan staff and earthquake survivors.

  • The development office of the Episcopal Diocese of Haiti deployed healthcare personnel immediately following the quake, concentrating efforts on those residing at the College St. Pierre tent camp. Approximately 5,000 people were served. The development office also coordinated limited ambulance services for those who needed transport to the Partners in Health hospital in Cange.
