Midwife to a New Nation

Praise be to Almighty God for having kept me and my fellow brothers and sisters to see the joy of this day and exercise our constitutional and democratic rights. I will praise him forever.

With these words, the Bishop of Rumbek Diocese expressed the profound sense of elation his parishioners and fellow countrymen and women felt at the success of the referendum creating Africa's 54th state - Southern Sudan.

Aided by Episcopal Relief & Development and other organizations affiliated with the Anglican Communion, the Episcopal Church of Sudan played a central role in an election process that has paved the way for the founding of a new nation.

Robert Radtke, PresidentPRESIDENT'S COLUMN:
Change, Hope and Hard Work

As I write this column, transformative change is taking place. Not just in Northern Africa and the Arab world but in Sudan, where the people of the war-ravaged southern region recently voted in a largely peaceful referendum to declare independence as Africa's 54th nation.

I couldn't be more proud of the work that Episcopal Relief & Development and other organizations in the Anglican Communion have done to help the Episcopal Church of Sudan prepare for the referendum, educate voters and ensure its success.

But now the hard work really starts.

Creating a Net Culture to Save Lives

NetsforLife Volunteers
NetsforLife© volunteers make sure that nets are properly hung in sleeping areas.
On the surface, Episcopal Relief & Development's NetsforLife© program partnership might seem rather simple - distributing insecticide-treated nets that are placed over sleeping areas so people lying under them don't get bitten by mosquitos carrying malaria. However, in practice, it's more complicated - but even more transformative.

That's because the main purpose of NetsforLife© isn't just to get the nets out; it's to change behavior and instill in families and their communities a "net culture" to help end a disease that kills one million people each year, most of them children under age five.

Preparing for Disaster - It's Up to All of Us
Disaster Reief
Volunteers cleaning a house after devastating floods overwhelmed Nashville last May.
As our friends along the Gulf Coast know all too well, disaster can strike at any time. While we often can't predict emergencies, we can plan for them.

This is the motivation behind Episcopal Relief & Development's Disaster Preparedness Initiative. Our goal for the initiative is to equip Episcopal leaders with the tools they need to establish a strategy for responding to disasters, no matter the size or scale.
