September 25th: Day of Awareness of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)

On September 25th, the United Nations will hold a Special Session on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in New York City. One year after the halfway point of this historic effort has passed, progress has been made, but urgent and increased efforts are needed if the world is to achieve these life saving goals by 2015.

In 2000, the Millennium Development Goals were developed by the international community, including leaders from 191 countries, to halve by the year 2015 the number of people living in poverty. The eight MDGs have been endorsed by development institutions and religious bodies around the world.

During the 2008 Lambeth Conference in England, Anglican bishops worldwide participated in the Lambeth Walk of Witness for the MDGs as a rallying call for all members of the Anglican Communion to do what they can to achieve the MDGs.

The Episcopal Church and Episcopal Relief & Development are committed to working towards the MDGs and ask for your support on September 25th in bringing awareness to the MDGs through prayer, fasting and witness.

In partnership with the Episcopal Public Policy Network (EPPN) and Episcopalians for Global Reconciliation (EGR), Episcopal Relief & Development is encouraging Episcopalians to speak out not only with their voices, but also with their dollars.

With your support of Episcopal Relief & Development’s Millennium Development Goals Inspiration Fund, a partnership with Jubilee Ministries and the Executive Council of the Episcopal Church, you can support Episcopal Relief & Development’s programs to prevent the spread of malaria, provide HIV/AIDS education and training and build clean water sources and sanitation infrastructure for communities.
