Episcopal Relief & Development Reaches Out in Wake of Chilean Earthquake
Updated Wednesday, March 3
On Saturday, February 27th at 2:34 am local time, Chile was hit by an 8.8-magnitude earthquake that has affected an estimated 2 million people. The current death toll is nearing 800 and that number is expected to rise as search and rescue teams continue their work.
The capital Santiago, which is 220 miles northeast of the quake’s epicenter, lost basic services such as water, electricity and telephones immediately following the quake. However, in the last few days, most services have been restored. Unfortunately, the city of Concepcion and the regions of Maule and Bio Bio have been more severely affected. Many people have been left homeless and still lack access to basic supplies such as food and water. Chilean military are working to return order to these areas so that aid can reach those in need swiftly.
In the wake of this disaster, Episcopal Relief & Development has reached out to the Anglican Church in Chile to determine the best response. Emergency funds will be disbursed to help purchase critical supplies such as food, water and shelter that will be distributed to families in areas hit hardest by the quake. The agency will continue to communicate with the Anglican Church in Chile as the situation unfolds and additional needs are assessed.
Please continue to keep all those affected in your prayers.
