Ash Wednesday: For the Beauty of the Earth Introduction
Our climate is changing and the consequences could be dire. As Christians and Episcopalians, what is our role and responsibility in climate change? What can I do? What can we as a Church do? How do we not become overwhelmed? Over the course of Lent, we invite you to join us in exploring more deeply God’s creation through this Lenten series For the Beauty of the Earth.

This week we offer an introduction to climate issues, share comments by Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori and offer some simple ideas and solutions to reducing our own ecological foot print.

Changes You Can Make
  • Begin by making small changes. Change your light bulbs to compact florescent light bulbs. These bulbs are 70-75% more efficient and will last from 8 – 10 years, saving you money over time in purchasing and electricity.

  • Don’t leave the tap running when brushing your teeth

Things You Can Do
  • Use Eco Palms for your Palm Sunday Celebration – to learn more or to order visit the Eco Palm Website

  • Valentines Day is Coming: Spread God’s love to more than just your loved one! Begin going green by purchasing organically grown roses that do not distrub fragile ecosystems or have harmful effects upon the people who grow them. You can also encourage your church’s altar guild to use organically grown flowers.  Try Organic Bouquet or

Green Stories from Episcopalians
Hello, fellow EPPN-ers. In the spirit of this Lenten series, I am taking on a discipline during lent – only using cloth shopping bags. I’ll tell the truth – I have cloth bags; I’ve had cloth bags for some time. But we all know – it is easy to forget them in the car or the kitchen or whatever fabulous storage spot I find for them. So, during Lent, I am making the commitment to just use my cloth bags – no plastic shopping bags for me. If I leave my sacks in the trunk, I’ll have to abandon my cart and run back out to the car (I hope it’s not raining!). I’ll take pictures and share with you my adventures and some of the reactions that I get from cashiers and other folks in line. Stay Tuned!
